“I like to see history from the lens of the present, emulating the past in the way it is today if I were to give it a physical form. What fascinates me about ruins is their little places of curiosity and corners of contemplation, making them sanctuaries of a multitude of unknown lives.”

ceramic artist

Shreya Alok is a full-time ceramic artist living and working in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Her practice is rooted in reviving ancient aesthetics, drawing from the rich artistic heritage of the Mughal period in India while seamlessly blending it with modern sensibilities. At the heart of her work lies a deep fascination with Islamic geometric patterns—meticulously carved into clay and often interwoven with elements of nature’s organic rhythm. These patterns are more than decoration; they are meditative structures that reflect unity between the mind, hand, and heart.

In her quaint studio surrounded by the Himalayan landscape, Shreya approaches clay as a living medium. Each piece she creates is an exploration of sacred geometry, as well as a reflection on imperfection, transience, and spiritual stillness. Her work is a dialogue between order and asymmetry, precision and fluidity. By embracing the imperfections inherent in both geometry and clay, she opens space for contemplation and healing.

Shreya’s ceramics are quiet yet powerful vessels of memory, process, and presence. Through them, she invites the viewer to slow down and rediscover the poetic tension between structure and spontaneity—between what is designed and what is felt. Her practice is a journey through form, pattern, and mindful making.

my travelling niche

My Little Blue Niche is a photographic journey that places a singular, handcrafted architectural fragment within diverse environments—each chosen for its unique interplay of time, texture, and memory. This ongoing series explores how a small object can evoke vast narratives. The niche, delicate and weathered, serves as a quiet anchor amidst architectural backdrops that speak of both decay and endurance. By situating it in spaces that echo historical richness or stark simplicity, the work contemplates the fragility of cultural memory and the layered meanings of place.

The contrast between the niche’s intimate scale and its monumental settings underscores the tension between permanence and impermanence. In each frame, the niche acts as a portal—inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with overlooked stories embedded in stone and shadow. Through this meditative practice, the series honors the emotional and temporal resonances carried within architectural forms across time.
